Jerusalem's top events for the week of December 24th

Has it really been 10 years since the Y2K bug threatened to destroy civilization and Napster threatened to destroy the music indtstry? Even Jerusalem, a city with 3,000 years of history under its belt, has undergone major changes in the past 10 years, like the start of the light rail, the new bus station, Mamilla mall, and several other major developments. Jerusalem will be saying goodbye to the oughts in classic fashion this and next week, with parties and events galore. But before we can get to the next year, we've got to finish this one in style, with Christmas parties for those partial to Santa, and lots more for everybody else.

• Tonight is Christmas Eve, and yes Virginia, Jerusalem has many halls for you to deck. Stardust bar will have you falala-ing with a very non-traditional Christmas (unless you normally spend it in a bar) and SPNI will have hot drinks and a lecture at Sergei's Courtyard before heading off for a traditional mass at nearby Notre Dame.

• The yuletide spirit continues Friday with a Christmas concert and Old City tour from Music Eterna, and a Christmas party at Hataklit.

• If all this religious celebrating has you hankering for some Biblical fun, Saturday night offers the perfect solution, a night of music at the Bible Lands Museum as part of their Saturday night wine and music series.

• Amos Kenan was one of the most well-known Israeli personalities to have died this past year. Honor the writer and artist by perusing a new collection of his art on display at Beit Avi Chai on Sunday.

• On Monday the Machol Shalem dance festival kicks off. A number of acts will be on showing off their moves.

• On Tuesday, save some money and see a free jazz show at the Yellow Submarine as Elan Bar Lavi returns to Jerusalem after touring the Americas.

• On Wednesday night, bring in one of the last days of the decade by partying like it's 2009 at one of the Jerusalem's many and varied bars. But before you get sloshed (and not too much if you want to save some strength for what the locals call Sylvester i.e. actual New Years) check out a special cantorial choir at the Gerard Bechar center.

We may not know what the next 10 years will bring, but we can tell you about the next few days. See it all at our full events page.
