Green Door Pizza Bakery

Green Door Pizza Bakery

A day spent appreciating the abundant sites of interest in the Moslem Quarter, or spent just wandering around its narrow and aimless stone alleyways, can create quite an appetite for pizza (as can most things). Traditional pizza lovers will have to make a pilgrimage to the Jewish Quarter for a slice, but more adventurous pizza connoisseurs can find an interesting interpretation of pizza right off the El-Wad souk.

When coming from Damascus Gate, take the first left on El-Wad into a stone alley and you'll see a pair of thick green doors leading into a dimly lit tile-and-concrete cavern: the Green Door Pizza Bakery. The family-owned restaurant doesn't have much in the way of décor, but your pizza will be cooked in front of your eyes by the chef, who stands next to the oven in a recessed pit in the floor.

It's not exactly Italian-style: the personal-sized pizzas are coated with cheese and a cracked egg, baked, given a layer of tomato sauce and served on a piece of paper. The pizzas can be augmented with pieces of beef. Even if it's not your style, for ten shekels it's a good deal.
